What is Car Insurance?

Car insurance, also known as auto insurance, covers you for liability arising out of operation of your vehicle. If you are involved in an accident and cause bodily injury or property damage to another party, auto insurance will pay the bill up to the policy limit. In Minnesota, auto insurance also includes Personal Injury Protection, which provides no-fault coverage for medical expenses up to a specified limit. Several additional coverage types may also be added on.

Do I Need Car Insurance?

Auto insurance is required to operate a vehicle on public roads in the state of MN. You may be required to carry comprehensive & collision coverage, known commonly as “full coverage”, if you have a loan on the vehicle.

What Types of Coverage Are Available?

  • Collision Coverage: Pays to repair or replace your vehicle if it’s damaged while being driven.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Pays to repair or replace your vehicle if it’s stolen, vandalized, or damaged in an incident other than a collision.

  • Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Provides liability coverage in a situation where the other party would typically have coverage but doesn’t or doesn’t have enough.
